Swaddled in Eban is inspired by Eban, an Adinkra symbol from Ghana meaning “fence.” The symbol represents love, safety, and security—the protection created around the people and places we hold dear.

The story of this quilt makes that meaning especially fitting.

The vibrant Ghanaian batiks used in Swaddled in Eban were originally made into protective face masks by Global Mamas artisans in Accra, Ghana, during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the masks were no longer needed, I reclaimed the textiles, taking apart the unused masks and giving the cloth a new purpose.

Fabric once intended to help protect a community now becomes a quilt created to wrap and protect a child.

Pieced together in a joyful patchwork of color and pattern, each quilt carries traces of its first life while becoming something entirely new. No two are exactly alike.

Swaddled in Eban is more than a baby quilt. It is a story of protection, transformation, resourcefulness, and care—an heirloom made to surround a child with the very things Eban represents: love, safety, and security.
