Freedom Quilt (Part 2)
Stitching History: Uncover the Underground Railroad's Secrets in a Quilt!
Class Description
Fact or Fiction?! Continue your exploration of the hidden symbols of the Underground Railroad in Part 2 of our quilting class. Building upon the foundation established in Part 1, we will complete the final 12 blocks of our lap-size Freedom Quilt. Drawing inspiration from the book "Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad," this session will delve deeper into a variety of techniques, including color theory, patchwork, quarter square triangles, curve piecing, and Y-seams." As we stitch together these significant blocks, we'll refine our quilting skills while engaging in thoughtful discussions about how these designs served as beacons of hope for enslaved individuals on their journeys to freedom. This hands-on, creative approach not only enhances our technical abilities but also honors the resilience and ingenuity of those who bravely sought liberation. By the end of this session, we will complete our quilts in preparation for The Quilt Empowerment Project Exhibition (TQEP), showcasing our artistic expressions and the powerful narratives woven into each stitch.
