Class Description

Fact or Fiction?! Delve into the hidden symbols of the Underground Railroad inspired by the book "Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad" to create a lap-size Freedom Quilt top by the end of 2024. Through this project, you'll explore color theory, patchwork, applique, English paper piecing, and curve piecing, while reflecting on how these blocks served as beacons of hope for slaves on their path to freedom. This project offers a hands-on, creative approach to African American history, honoring the resilience and ingenuity of those who sought freedom. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner/Advanced Beginner SUPPLY LIST: 10-15 Fat Quarter or 1/4 yard cuts of cotton fabric in a variety of colors ranging from light to dark A minimum of 2–yards of cotton fabric for the background and sashing Rotary cutter, self-healing cutting mat, and acrylic quilting ruler Sewing Machine Thread Straight Pins Hand-sewing tools, including needle and thread MATERIALS PROVIDED: Patterns Coloring Sheets English Paper Piecing Template Fusible Interfacing Book, Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad SAVE THE DATE: The Quilt Empowerment Exhibition December 7, 2024

Cancellation Policy

Rescheduling is permitted at any time. In the event that you need to cancel or reschedule your attendance, please notify us at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled class. Failure to provide sufficient notice may result in forfeiture of the class fee. However, we understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise, and therefore, makeup classes are available to catch up on missed instructions. Makeup classes are scheduled for the following dates: January 20th, February 10th, or March 2nd. Please contact us to arrange your makeup class at least one week in advance.
